Climate in the Costa Calida
The ‘Costa Calida’ (the ‘warm’ coast), is one of the driest parts of Spain and is known for its year round good weather, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. With an average daytime temperature of 22 degrees, it provides the perfect place to get away from British weather.
What to Wear
During the summer months (from June to September), you are unlikely to wear more than shorts and T-shirts, whatever the time of day. During the Spring and Autumn, you will probably need a jumper for the evenings. In the Winter, while you will often be out in a T-shirt during the day in the sun, the temperature does drop quite quickly at night and warmer clothes are needed.
Does it rain often?
The Costa Calida is known for its dry weather, however it does rain from time to time but normally only for a short time. The wetter months are April and October, when the weather can be a bit more changeable, however relative to Britain it is still very dry!
Weather for Golf
The best months for golf are between September and June. Because July and August are the hottest months, if you are playing golf during these times, it is best to play early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Hours of Daylight
In the Winter the hours of daylight are longer than the UK: it gets light at about 8am and dark about 6pm, giving more time in the day to get out and about.
In the summer it gets dark at about 10pm, giving lots of time for relaxed evenings and barbecuing on the terrace.
Sea Temperatures
There are two seas in the Costa Calida: the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor. The Mar Menor is a large inland sea surrounded by beaches and is sometimes referred to as ‘The Largest Swimming Pool in the World’. Because it is shallow and is separated from the Mediterranean, it is warmer than the Med and has higher concentrations of salts, thought to be beneficial to health. In the height of summer the water is like a warm bath and the beaches are perfect for families.
The Mediterranean fluctuates between 16 degrees in Winter and 23 degrees in Summer. The Costa Calida has the most beaches of any Spanish coastline and some beautiful protected areas.
